Leventon's Line

tile small

Leventon's Line was devised by Charlie Leventon of Mercia Fell Runners, and was first completed as a two-day backpack with Rick Robson in May 1990. The concept was to link Langollen and Barmouth in a near straight Line, taking in the high ground of the Berwyns, Arans, Dovey Forest and Cadair hills. The result was a stunning line clocking up some 60 miles and 12,000 feet of ascent.

For a while the line received little attention, but recently a number of fell runners have taken up the challenge, some adding in extra summits along the way, and some completing the original line in an impressive sub-14 hours.

Due to this increase in popularity and to recognise this amazing natural challenge, we have dedicated this section of the site to Leventons Line. Here you will find details of the route, all the facts and figures from previous completions as well as personal accounts written by the runners.

The Route

Here are the way points for the principal challenge. Use OS Explorer Maps 255 Llangollen & Berwyn and OL23 Cadair Idris & Llyn Tegid (1:25000).

There is of course plenty of scope to add summits to the challenge. However, the principal challenge route would seem to remain valid: a straight line (via trig point ‘waymarkers’) between Moel Fferna and Cadair Idris – Penygadair, having started in Llangollen and finishing in Barmouth – two well known resort towns.

Previous achievements would seem to indicate that 18 hours represents a challenging benchmark whether one chooses to complete the principal route or add extensions.

Don’t forget money to pay the bridge toll at Barmouth!
