stuHigh Sports was established and is still enthusiastically led by Stuart Cathcart. Stuart is known for an extensive list of new climbs in the UK: over 300 new routes on Clwyd Limestone and North Wales, a solo ascent of The Cad E7, first ascent of Crash Landing (Uk’s hardest climb of its time), placing the dreaded bolt on New Era in the Llanberis Pass and the first true winter solo traverse of the Cuillin Ridge. Also numerous repeats and first ascents of major routes worldwide: Matterhorn N.Face, Walker Spur, Droites, Eiger, Dru, Boulder Highway, Motorhead, West face Bulnes, Norway’s Troll Wall, USA (East face and Keeler Pinnacle Mt. Whitney, Devils Tower, Wind Rivers, Nose El Cap, Reg Route Half Dome, S.Face Charlotte Dome, Diamond wall Colorado….) Baffin Islands Mt.Asgard West face, Mt.Turnweather, also forays into Asia, Canada and South Africa.

STAFF - STUART CATHCART OVERHANG PIC ABOUT PHOTO (191 x 310)In 1988 Stuart started the High Sports Paragliding School one of the first fully dedicated Mountain Footlaunch Paragliding schools which successfully trained thousands of students and many instructors. The school led the way at introducing pilots to more serious destination flying worldwide; USA, Africa and Europe as well as establishing long distance flights and new sites in the UK.

Author of the first Clwyd Limestone guide and in 2006 the Shropshire Bouldering guide available exclusively from High Sports.

In 2002 Stuart set the record for the fastest E2E SOLO UNSUPPORTED cycle ride from Lands End to John O’Groats, 984 miles in 4days 12hrs: The rider must be unsupported and solo, the route must pass through Shrewsbury, everything for the journey for sleeping (tent, sleeping bag), cooking, clothing, repairs to be carried, only food may be bought on route, campsites or open camping only and the journey must be ratified by an on route observer but no assistance of any kind provided. Interested in attempting the same journey or smashing the record?, contact Stuart at High Sports and become part of the E2E SOLO CLUB and get the free exclusive T shirt for all completions of the distance!  Although his journey and achievement was not intended as a charity fund raising event,  family, friends, customers and well wishers raised over £5,000 off the back of Stuart's efforts which was donated to local Shropshire charities and the British Heart Foundation.

In 2000 Stuart started a new incentive, the YOUNGSTERS IN THE MOUNTAINS fund,  a success story which to this day he still proudly leads and which has gone from strength to strength.  The YM fund which presents small financial awards to under 18's on an individual application basis, is designed to help young people develop their own interest in mountain sports such as rock climbing, walking & backpacking, fell running, canoeing, orienteering etc... and hopefully Expand their Horizons.   Funds are primarily raised from the annual High Sports Winter Lecture Series, other High Sports events, local races and private donations. In the first 10 years sufficient funds had been raised to sponsor over 200 YM awards to succesful candidates.

From the recently released book Who’s Who in British Climbing; “Briefly reigned supreme as Britain’s top crazed solo loon after his lonely climb of The Cad (E7). This tends to overshadow his more rational, but arguably no less impressive achievements. Cathcart has an enormous roll-call of new routes to his credit, including over 300 on Clwyd limestone. He also made the first ascent of Crash Landing – then the UK’s hardest climb as well as controversially placing the first bolt in sacred Llanberis rock with New Era.

Far from a rock-jock, Cathcart also made the first solo winter traverse of the Cuillin Ridge, and has made numerous first ascents and repeats of major routes in the Alps and Europe as well as occasional forays further afield. These days he might more often be found flying attached to a paraglider as well as walking, climbing, biking, or stock taking at his Shrewsbury mountain sports shop.”
